A Notre Dame Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a simple, tax-efficient way to support the University and your other favorite causes. Think of it as a charitable investment account; with a minimum gift of $500,000—or $250,000 if the fund is dedicated entirely to purposes at Notre Dame—your gift is invested alongside the Notre Dame Endowment without direct fees, allowing your generosity to grow over time.

The ND DAF is structured into two distinct components: a retained fund dedicated to supporting specific programs within the University, and a distributable fund that offers the flexibility to recommend grants to external 501(c)(3) organizations. It is a powerful, flexible tool designed to serve as your partner in long-term, mission-aligned philanthropy.

How it Could Look

Sarah, a Notre Dame alumna, established a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) with $1 million in appreciated stock. In doing so, Sarah avoided capital gains taxes on the appreciated securities and immediately lowered her taxable income by securing an income tax charitable deduction. Her entire investment is positioned to grow within the University’s endowment without being reduced by direct management fees, allowing for greater philanthropic reach. Half of her gift will ultimately support Notre Dame programs through the Retained Fund, while the other half can be directed to other charities aligned with Notre Dame’s Catholic values. Through the online DAF Portal, Sarah easily recommends grants, grows her fund over time, and creates a lasting legacy that reflects her values and connection to Notre Dame.
